Now is the time for homeowners who’d like to save on property taxes.
If you purchased a home in Texas before the new year, you have until April 30, 2018 to utilize the advantages of your purchase and file for a residential homestead exemption — a legal exemption that removes part of the home’s value from taxation. With this exemption, homeowners can potentially save thousands on property taxes, depending on the value of the home.
To qualify, you must have owned the property as your primary residence by January 1, 2018, and you may not claim a homestead exemption on any other property.
There are two steps to file.
- Verify that ownership has changed and the tax rolls reflect your new ownership by contacting your county’s appraisal-district office. Homeowners may also verify via the property-search feature available on all appraisal-district office websites.
- Download the Application for Residential Homestead Exemption form from your appraisal district’s website. Complete it, then follow the mailing instructions specific to your county. Contact your county’s appraisal-district office to see if you are able to file online.
Lastly, be aware of companies requiring payment for these services as it is free to file for the homestead exemption.
