One of our favorite aspects of the Dean & DeLuca Invitational has almost nothing to do with golf. Oh, sure, the kids who participate in youth clinic or Caddie Day, run the short-game area or participate as reporters are in it for the golf. But to the longtime volunteer leader and past chair of the tournament held at the Colonial Country Club, Harold Muckleroy, it’s all about the number nine — and, no, not the front or back nine. Nine happens to be the number of Core Values expressed by the PGA’s national The First Tee organization, founded in 1997: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. “They’re great virtues for anyone to live by,” says Muckleroy, founding partner of Muckleroy & Falls commercial construction company of Fort Worth. The First Tee of Fort Worth launched in 2003.

“Caddie Day was a creation by members of Colonial Country Club in 2005,” Muckleroy says, “and was the very first program of its type on the PGA Tour.” The kids in The First Tee program earn the cherished right to caddie at Colonial by passing all their classroom work, which includes learning the nine Core Values. During practice rounds on the Monday and Wednesday before the tournament, The First Tee kids take over caddie duties at Hole 13, putting on professional caddie bibs and carrying the pros’ clubs. Many times, the bags weigh more than the kids — so they improvise by carrying just one club, often a putter or the club used on the tee box.

As the golf pros became used to Caddie Day, they began to work more with the kids on their grip techniques, or reading putts. A tradition begun in the second year, photos are taken of each First Tee participant and their pro, which are later autographed by the pro and returned to the caddie as a keepsake. Also begun in year two, close-in private parking is arranged for the parents bringing their kids to Caddie Day; a tournament shuttle service whisks them to the closest entry gate. Other opportunities have been created for the Caddie Day kids and their parents, including maintaining the practice chipping green by rounding up golf balls and raking the sand traps and, for the adults, volunteering at the entry gate to scan electronic tickets. The kids of The First Tee have also become very active participants in the Youth Golf Clinic and the Junior Invitational, a three-hole competition between selected members of The First Tee.

This year, on Tuesday, May 23, the organization opened a new facility at a local elementary school, which will serve more than 4,000 low-income kids. The First Tee resonates personally for Muckleroy. “I love golf because of its history, legends and the spirit in which it is played. The player calls fouls on himself. I like the integrity of it. I also want to see the game extend into the future as a way to reach young people.”

Art in the Square | 18 Years of Supporting Southlake Charities

It is a happy birthday, indeed. The Southlake Women’s Club is preparing to celebrate the 18th anniversary of Art in the Square. The annual, three-day event begins at 4 p.m. Friday, April 28, and ends at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 30.

More than 160 internationally renowned artists will have their work on display at the 18th Art in the Square, plus local, emerging and high-school artists, too, for viewing and for sale.

Support from the artists, the community and the event’s sponsors is “incredible,” says longtime volunteer and 2017 sponsorship chairman Carmen Evans, who nurtures relationships with about 100 cash and in-kind sponsors each year, including Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty as well as other major supporters. Evans attended her first Art in the Square in 2002 and immediately knew she wanted to play a role in “such a cool event.”

“I had to be part of it,” says the native Texan, who had moved to Southlake with her husband and two children the year before. After working with entertainment and beverage sales, Evans found her niche in securing sponsorships.

“That is the role that fits me,” she says.

Since its first year, Art in the Square has raised $2.5 million and annually raises about $200,000, which the Southlake Women’s Club distributes to local charities. This year, the women selected 32 beneficiaries in Northeast Tarrant County that help women, children and families in need.

The event leadership takes pride in the fact that, with the exception of police and fire protection, it is run entirely by 800-plus volunteers.

This year, the Marshall Tucker Band will take the Methodist Southlake Hospital Main Stage on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. A limited number of VIP tickets are available to purchase a front-and-center spot for the Southern Rock headliners. On Friday night: The Walton Stout Band is back to kick off the three-day festival. Both the Main Stage and Gazebo Stage will host entertainment throughout the weekend.

Don’t miss Le Bistro, offering delicious fare from local vendors – everything from pizza to cakes to kettle corn, or cruise food trucks along Route 66 and enjoy beverages from the Filling Station.

“Every home buyer wants to make a smart investment,” writes Forbes about its list of 2017 Best Buy Cities—the country’s top 20 hottest housing markets to invest in this year. High on that list? Fort Worth and Dallas. Forbes collaborated with Local Market Monitor, a company that tracks 300-plus metropolitan areas, to determine where home prices, jobs and populations are up — in this case, way up.

Fort Worth’s numbers put it at No. 9 on the list. Its population of almost 2.4 million is up by more than 5 percent in just three years. Job growth? Up more than 2 percent. But it’s the home prices that boggle: Fort Worth’s are up 9 percent, year over year — and are predicted to go up 17 percent in the next three years. At least.

And the hottest investment city? “Dallas dominates,” says Forbes. “The home of Exxon Mobil and the Dallas Cowboys claims the No. 1 ranking. Dallas has an average home price of $233,000. That’s up 3.9 percent from a year ago and underpriced by 3 percent compared to the city’s historic average. Local Market Monitor forecasts prices will increase 31 percent by 2020 thanks in part to 3.9-percent job growth in the past year and 6.2 percent population growth in the last three.”

If you’re looking to improve your home but can’t guarantee you’ll live there forever, chances are you’re weighing the costs and benefits of certain renovations—what kind of return will you see if or when you need to sell? Knowing the answer drastically increases your enjoyment of your space for the time being and gives you some peace of mind about the future. Clean home siding  (whether entirely new or simply power washed) and landscaping go a long way in this department, as well.

Kitchen

As newly built homes feature more and more spectacular kitchens, which are quickly returning to their prominent position as a family gathering place and not just an area for food preparation, buyers are looking for the same sophistication in resales. Spend money thoughtfully—according to HGTV, some cities (like Providence, Miami, New Orleans, and San Diego) see more than a 100% return on minor kitchen renovations. What to focus on here? Appliances and surfaces that combine maximum efficiency with beauty—think stainless steel ranges and granite countertops.

Bathroom

Bathrooms updates can also offer 100% recoupment, but owners must choose their renovations carefully. A steam or walk-in shower can win buyers over; they’ll feel pampered by the splurge. In contrast, an expensive tub might seem equally luxurious—or perhaps more aesthetic—but it provides a comfort most homeowners don’t have time for on a daily basis and forgoes space, often precious in a smaller room like the bath.

While purchasing a home has always been an investment in the future, current market conditions actually make it the most affordable living option available. According to a study from Trulia released last quarter, buying a home in today’s market is 37.7 percent cheaper than renting on a national scale. Data shows that, while this is a national trend, there’s nowhere you’ll find that buying is more affordable than renting than in the South – home to eight out of the top 10 metros with the greatest financial benefit of homeownership.

Experts say 2017 is the time for homebuyers to make a move before mortgage rates start climbing and property values rise another 7.3 percent (according to Zillow projections). In a recent post for Lowe’s Open House Newsroom, Mick Koster reports that research predicts a 100 percent increase in the number of Americans residing in smart homes within the next five years. Given that a quarter of U.S. homeowners already occupy a smart home, this information is incredibly significant—theoretically, by 2022, half of U.S. homeowners will have opted into this technological upgrade.
