Know Your Architecture | Mid-Century Modern

08/17/2017

From whence it came:

The Mid-Century Modern movement in America was an adaptation of two austere, straight-lined architectural movements in Europe: the International and Bauhaus styles. American mid-century architecture, which spanned roughly from the late 1930s to the ’70s, is warmer and more organic, often with wood elements — beams, columns, walls — where the Europeans employed concrete and steel.

What makes it mid-century:

Flat or vaulted roofs, large plate-glass windows, open floor plans and a feeling of the inside and outside blurred into one — thanks not only to walls of glass and large glazed doors that slide away but also to the continuation of the same materials outside as inside, especially flooring. (Think slate, terrazzo or travertine.)

Other cues:

Carports, clerestory windows, atriums, large stone or brick fireplaces which anchor the whole house.

Why it works:

Mid-Century Modern brings nature in via its walls of windows. It’s a refreshing way to live, harmoniously with the outdoors. The clean lines of Mid-Century Modern architecture also allow the eye and mind to relax — leading to expansive thoughts.

In the words of Italian architect Renzo Piano, the designer behind The Shard in London and Dallas’ own Nasher Sculpture Center, “One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting over again.” The space through which we move undeniably influences our psyches — the houses we build, both literally and figuratively, becoming reflections of our aesthetics, values, and choices. Every Thursday, we’ll investigate at length the details of a different architectural tradition as we hope to guide readers toward their truest tastes; to gain a more profound understanding of the symbiosis between home and inhabitant; and to usher in, with each style and each studied structure, a fresh take, a renaissance of the mind and spirit, experience made new and wondrous once more — like life starting over again.
