What better way to show the spirit of giving then by supporting the outstanding charities that assist neighbors in need across the area? Recently, Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty joined CultureMap.com in an online charity challenge designed to raise awareness for the needs of 12 worthy nonprofits.

The winner, with 32 percent of the votes, was Carry the Load. The nonprofit aims to restore the meaning of Memorial Day and honor fallen heroes, veterans, active duty military, firefighters, law enforcement and rescue personnel through a national rally. The organization’s best-known event is a 20-hour march in Dallas over Memorial Day weekend.

Carry the Load was awarded a $2,500 cash donation as well as an advertising package that includes two events and designation as CultureMap’s 2014 Community Service Project. Other charities highlighted in the challenge include A.W.A.R.E., The Family Place, L.E.A.P., The Men of Nehemiah, Red Cross, Salvation Army, S.P.C.A., Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, The Trinity Trust, The Wilkinson Center and The Birthday Party Project.
