If it’s spring, it’s time for the 2nd Annual Spring Modern Home Tour in Dallas. Coordinated by moderndallas magazine and sponsored by Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty, the May 17 tour features four homes, with a preview party hosted in a modern live-work building on May 16.

Here’s an in-depth look at one of the tour stops. For more information on the tour – and modern design in Dallas – follow Dallas Moderns.

5771 Berkshire incorporates 21st century modern design into every aspect of the home, plus uses the latest advanced construction techniques and technologies to keep the environmental footprint of the home to a minimum. It is designed for future solar panel and the roof drains are set up for future rainwater collection. These features are helping the home be on track for GOLD Certification under the US Green Building Council’s LEED for Homes rating system.

The home is oriented to the south to provide each room with natural lighting while allowing it to collect all the sun on the winter season, and it will be shaded on the summer because of the cantilevered portions of the roofs. The home also has a cross-flow ventilation with careful window placement that allows the owners to cool the house without using the AC in the spring and fall.

The 4,200-square-foot home is built using insulated concrete forms. The insulated concrete forming system was chosen by the Architect, Antonio de la Carrera and the homeowners, because the system has the reputation of creating quiet, strong and open indoor living spaces.

Architect: Antonio de la Carrera
