Say goodbye to unicorns, princesses and damsels in distress. Today, girls are looking for action, adventure and, more importantly, strong female role models, said Kitty St. Claire, Children’s Librarian at the University Park Public Library.

The Hunger Games

Much like Katniss Everdeen in the popular series The Hunger Games, teen girls are looking to be strong, independent and brave.

Teen girls are looking for stories with fewer characters and stronger relationships between the characters.

“A few good books I can recommend for teen girls are The Underland Chronicles, by Suzanne Collins, the Shadow Children series by Margaret Paterson Haddix, and 39 Clues, which is an interactive novel written by a collaboration of authors,” St. Claire said.

With the rise of strong female authors, it isn’t hard to find books with strong female characters in all genres, St. Claire said.
