The first day of school means new teachers, new friends … and, in Highland Park Independent School District, a tradition that has been carried out for decades – the first day of school T-shirts!
We caught up with a few seniors from Highland Park High School who presented T-shirts to the future class of 2027 – the new kindergarteners. Linda Raya, coordinator of fine arts for Highland Park ISD and the senior class sponsor, has been involved with the tradition of handing out T-shirts to the kindergarteners for years.
“It has been going on for as long as I can remember,” Raya says. “The high school seniors wear shirts that say the year they are graduating, and they go to the kindergarten and put shirts on the kids that say 2027. It’s a wonderful day. The youngsters and the kindergarten kids are thrilled they have the big kids putting shirts on them. I even have students who still have their shirt from kindergarten – and it still fits.”
Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty had the pleasure of following a few seniors to Robert S. Hyer Elementary in University Park and Armstrong Elementary School in Highland Park to catch some of the excitement on film. Seeing the kids’ reactions was priceless. We were so thrilled to participate as this year’s T-Shirt sponsor and to congratulate all the kids on a great first day of school at HPISD.
