Charles Goodnight, the “father of the Texas Panhandle,” is a legendary figure who inspired the popular Lonesome Dove novels and films and whom historian J. Frank Dobie said “approached greatness more nearly than any other cowman of history.”

With Oliver Loving, Goodnight drove cattle north in 1866 on the Goodnight-Loving Trail. He invented the chuck wagon and established the Panhandle Stockman’s Association to improve cattle-breeding and fight rustlers and outlaws.

A decade later, to take advantage of available grass, timber, water and game, Goodnight joined Irishman John Adair in founding the JA Ranch in Palo Duro Canyon, the Panhandle’s first ranch.

The ranch’s extensive improvements include several homes, hunting lodges and camps. It also has numerous pens, barns, an arena and more water, including irrigation quality water, than is commonly found on working cattle ranches in the area.
