A born-and-raised Fort Worthian, Becky Renfro Borbolla is no stranger to the annual Stock Show. But as she visited the Stock Show Sale on Feb. 7, 2012, she realized that the groups buying animals, save for a group of ladies buying lambs, were all men.
Puzzled by the lack of women, Renfro Borbolla emailed 75 of her closest girlfriends to see if they were interested in writing a $500 check, intending to pool the contributions and buy a steer from a young woman at the sale.
“We need to invest in these young women,” said Renfro Borbolla, vice president and co-owner of Renfro Foods, Inc. “They are already learning a trade by building, marketing and selling their product. These are our future business women.”
And so, Women Steering Business was born.
Four weeks after the email that started it all, Renfro Borbolla had raised $45,000, more than tripling donations by the following year. A testament to the void this non-profit fills, donations increased to $210,000 by its third year and are on trend to increase again for the 2016 Stock Show.
Throughout the year, Women Steering Business serves as a networking group for businesswomen of all ages, and when the Stock Show rolls around, they all rally in their red jackets to support the young women showing their steers.
In only three years, Women Steering Business has purchased 13 steers and awarded nearly $400,000 in scholarships, all thanks to Renfro Borbolla’s initiative and the myriad of women and businesses like Capital Grille, Park Place Motors and Aflac Wet who have joined her.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry recognized Renfro Borbolla’s unflagging commitment to leadership and service by commissioning her a Yellow Rose of Texas, the highest honor a Texas Governor can bestow. Enterprising and fearless, she is an inspiration to the young women she serves.
