When Hard Work Pays $150,000 – #FWSSR2016

Myka Blissard is no stranger to the show ring. Entering Open Shows as early as age 7, she is a bona fide veteran at age 14 with more than 300 shows under her belt and having made friends from around the county in the process.

JZ Purchase

Following in her parents’ footsteps, showing steers and heifers came naturally to Myka, though not without its share of elbow grease. “It’s hard work,” she admits, “but I just love it.” Which is a good thing, considering the daily responsibilities of feeding, bathing and working the animals are enough to qualify as a full-time job.

Among many others, Myka participated in last year’s Fort Worth Stock Show, showing her then 22-month-old steer, JZ. The morning of the Stock Show, Myka woke up at 3 a.m. to wash JZ. “It was so cold that morning that it took forever to blow him out,” she recalls. But by 4 a.m., they were at the show, and it wasn’t long before the judges granted Myka and JZ Grand Reserve recognition.

Members of Women Steering Business, a local non-profit founded to empower young women like Myka, were thrilled to purchase JZ for $150,000. For Myka, the victory was bittersweet knowing that JZ would be going to the Fort Worth Zoo instead of back home with her, but she has reinvested a portion of her winnings into other animals, setting aside the rest for her college education.

As you make your way to the Stock Show this year, keep an eye out for Myka in the show ring and the signature red jackets of Women Steering Business who will be investing in young champions like Myka from the stands.
